Thaynes Canyon Neighborhood History

In 1847, pioneers crossed the Wasatch and proclaimed, "This is the place."

Twenty years later, some soldiers crossed over Guardsman Pass, found silver, and celebrated, "We'll be rich!"

And in 2015, Vail eyed Park City and declared both those things:  "This is the place – we'll be rich!"

These are familiar stories, how Park City transformed from Wild West wilderness, to mining boomtown, to world-renowned ski destination and, now, two-time host of the Olympic Winter Games.

The history of Thaynes Canyon subdivision begins alongside Park City's ski era, shortly after United Park City Mines in 1963 reimagined its land as Treasure Mountains Ski Resort, installed the nation's longest gondola cableway, and invited guests to board a mine train to travel three miles underground up Thaynes Canyon via the "skier subway".  The mining company constructed the first nine holes of our golf course the same year, and Park West Ski Resort opened to the north in 1968.   A decade later, Park City Municipal raised $500,000 to purchase the golf course, our town’s first big investment in the preservation of public recreational space.  The lush meadow at the foot of Jupiter quickly became a coveted location to live and play – much as it is today.

In 1971, Developer Warren King recorded a plat of 96 lots for “Thaynes Canyon”, Park City’s first subdivision.

Municipal code was at that point rudimentary, so the developer sought to guide buildout by recording a Declaration stipulating both (1) some building restrictions, or "CCRs", and (2) incorporation of the original Thaynes Canyon HOA, an early adoption of the burgeoning HOA trend.

Homes sprouted up along the south side of Payday Drive and its cul-de-sacs, many of them “research homes”, kit-style modulars trucked in on flatbeds.  Some of these efficient builds have stood the test of time and still perch today along our #7 fairway – now endowed with a canopy of mature evergreens, boisterous summertime blooms, the sound of splashing creeks, and spectacular views across expansive green up to the ski slopes beyond.  Next time you walk, run, ski, bike, or drive through Thaynes, slow down and enjoy!

We are together blessed to call this special place home.
